The Depth of this Virgo New Moon

Sun & New Moon in Virgo Square Uranus in Gemini + A Yod

Although this New Moon in Virgo is one of the most gorgeous of the year, it’s got high drama potential. How open are you to disruption?

Normally a sturdy, stable new moon, this new moon in Virgo signature (our last regular new moon until mid-October) is provocative. The sun and the moon will form an exact square to Uranus in Gemini. Squares are indicative of conflict, tension, and friction. Uranus is the planet of awakenings, breakthroughs, liberation, and rebelliousness. The planet’s energy is magnetic and discontinuous, so the downloads can be like a “surprise!” incoming. Eclipse vibes—something we’ll be working with for the entire lunar cycle.

Whether unpleasant surprises are on the horizon or not, the question might not be “how can I tweak my routines?” but “how can I shake up my routines? How can I bring more freedom to my life? How can I innovate in my day-to-day?”

Mercurial energy to the max. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, and Uranus is kind of like Mercury’s bigger, more extreme sibling. Are all systems a-go? What’s more is that this new moon is the first of two Virgo new moons this season; it’s happening just after the zero degree of Virgo, and it’s the activating point of a Yod. Shaped like an isosceles triangle, a yod signifies the “finger of god.” The tip of the yod points to the Virgo new moon and sun (which are conjunct). The energy incoming is from Pluto, the planet of death, rebirth, and power, in Aquarius at one end, and Neptune and Saturn who are traveling together in Aries at the other. Neptune is the planet of dreams, ideals, and illusion, while Saturn is the planet of boundaries, karma, and reality checks. Combine this with the exact square to Uranus. Translation: All the outer planets, our societal or transpersonal planets, are bringing it to this new moon. If you’re seeking transformation, this may be your moment—and humanity’s too. With all of the outer planets changing signs this year—an extreme rarity—and three out of four of them in retrograde, we could see BIG SHIFTS.

Deeper dive: This new moon kicks off eclipse season. Eclipse season can be transformative. Some might call it brutal, aka: an opportunity. The full moon in Pisces on September 7 is an eclipse, and the new moon Virgo that bookends this cycle on September 21st is one as well. The north node is in Pisces and the south is in Virgo. Eclipses are transformative on their own, so you’ll want to decide for yourself whether you’ll engage in ceremony during the season. Some witches do, some don’t. If you do, it’s a powerful time for shadow work and self-reflection. If you do not, you’ll want to sit with, explore, and reflect on whatever intention you set with this new moon through and until October 6, the full moon in Aries.

Blessed be.
